Garage doors, as the largest moving part of the house, should be opened or used with another device such as remote controls. This is to make sure safety, efficiency and quickness. And who would really want to lift their garage doors with their bare hands?
Garage door openers are motorized devices that open and close garage doors mostly controlled by wall switches and remote controls. There are three types of garage door openers that you can choose from: Chain drive, Screw drive, and Belt drive.
Chain Drive Openers
Chain Drive Opener is the oldest type and is the most popular. While this type of drive provides good value, they are a bit noisy when opening or closing the garage door. It’s not recommended if you want your place to be quiet especially if your garage door is below a bedroom or is near to a place where silence is necessary. Chain drivers are durable and are reliable so if noise is not a problem, you can go with this option. However, upgraded chain drive openers can come with chain separators to prevent chains from hitting the track thus reducing the noise.
Belt Drive Openers
Belt drive openers operates the same way as chain drive openers but they use rubber or rubber-like belt on a cog to open or close garage doors. Since this doesn’t have noisy metal parts, it is the quietest option available in the market today. However, belt drive openers are a bit more expensive.
Screw Drive Openers
Midway in cost and noisiest are screw drive openers. Screw drive openers use a long metal rod threaded like a screw to lift and close garage doors. It has fewer moving parts and produces much less noise than chain drive openers but not as quiet as belt drive openers. Though it has less moving parts, maintenance is a bit more necessary here than the other drivers.
Another thing that you should consider when choosing a garage door opener is the power. Most garage door openers use ½ Horse Power and it is also the most popular motor speed. This is typically for two-car door garage. For heavier doors, mostly for commercial use, you can go with ¾ horse power. The price difference between the two is usually not significant.
Standard garage doors are 7-feet high, and will accommodate up to six inches taller than that. If you want higher, then you can use an extension kit.
Remote Control or Wall Control
Your decision to use remote control or wall control to open your garage. Most remote control devices open a single door but some also opens multiple doors and have multiple buttons. Wall-mounted control is used as well and to turn the garage lights on and off.
Knowing about your garage door openers can highly increase your chance of getting the right fit for your needs. Ideally, you can hire a professional to take a look at your house and recommend the best option for you while giving you the best value for your money.
